Hemrin Dam, Embankment dam on Diyala River, Iraq
The Hemrin Dam extends 3,360 meters across the Diyala River, forming a substantial reservoir that holds over 2 billion cubic meters of water.
Yugoslav company GIK Hidrogradnja constructed the dam between 1976 and 1981, creating a structure that reaches 53 meters in height.
The dam construction required extensive archaeological excavations at multiple sites, including Tell Madhur, Tell Rashid, and Tell Saadiya, preserving ancient artifacts.
The dam facility generates 50 megawatts of hydroelectric power while regulating water flow for agricultural irrigation in northeastern Baghdad regions.
This infrastructure project represents a central component in Iraq's water management system, affecting relationships between regional and federal governments.
