Imam Ali Mosque

The Imam Ali Mosque features a double-shell onion dome reaching 42 meters high and two minarets that extend 38 meters into the sky.

The first structure over Ali's tomb was built in 786 by Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, with the current building dating from a 1621 reconstruction.

Millions of Shia Muslims gather at the mosque annually for religious celebrations, including the flag-raising ceremony of Jahenda Bala during Nowruz.

The mosque maintains separate entrances for men and women, while numerous hotels line the surrounding streets to accommodate visiting pilgrims.

According to Shia tradition, the mosque contains not only the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib but also the remains of Adam and Noah.
