Khan al-Rubu', Ottoman caravanserai near Karbala, Iraq.

Khan al-Rubu' is a rectangular Ottoman-era caravanserai with an enclosed central courtyard surrounded by rooms for travelers and merchants. The structure displays simple, functional architecture with sturdy walls and small openings characteristic of such trading buildings.

The caravanserai was built during Ottoman rule and served as a rest stop for merchant caravans traveling between Karbala and Najaf. It stands as evidence of the important trade routes that connected the region during that period.

The building displays traditional Islamic design principles through its symmetrical layout and central courtyard that reflect how merchants and travelers lived together. Visitors can observe today how such caravanserais functioned as trading hubs and meeting places.

The site sits southwest of Karbala and is reachable from the city, though visitors should plan ahead since infrastructure in the area is limited. It is best to visit in the morning when weather is milder and wear suitable footwear, as the ground can be uneven.

The grounds have hosted regular events since 2017 that honor the heritage of trade routes and provide local communities with a gathering space. These recent activities have given the historic structure a living dimension without altering its original form.
