Karpal Singh Drive, Seafront road and esplanade in George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Karpal Singh Drive is a paved seafront road and esplanade in the Jelutong area of George Town, Penang. It runs along the Penang Strait, with open views of passing ships and the Penang Bridge in the distance.
The road was built on reclaimed land that pushed the original shoreline further into the sea. It was renamed in 2014 after Karpal Singh, a prominent Malaysian lawyer and politician from Penang who died in a road accident that same year.
The esplanade is flat and easy to walk or cycle along, and the early evening is a good time to visit when temperatures drop. Parking is available on-site, but public buses do not stop directly at the promenade.
Several outdoor sculptures by Japanese artist Hitori Nakayama, including blue pylons and light pieces that move in the wind, are placed along the promenade. These works were funded by a private property company that developed the land next to it.
