Tarata, Provincial capital in Tacna Region, Peru
Tarata is a province in the Tacna Region of southern Peru comprising eight administrative districts. The landscape transitions between mountain ranges, valleys, and highlands across varying elevations.
The area was founded in 1611 with the construction of the San Benedicto Abad temple, establishing the settlement formally. Afterward, territorial disputes affected the region for several decades during the early 20th century.
The local population speaks Spanish and Aymara, reflecting indigenous communities that have inhabited the valleys and mountains for generations. This linguistic diversity shapes daily life and local traditions across the region.
The eight districts are Chucatamani, Estique, Estique-Pampa, Sitajara, Susapaya, Tarata, Tarucachi, and Ticaco. Each district has its own center, and road connections link these communities together.
The Ticaco district sits at exceptional elevation and offers views of the Andean mountain landscape. This high altitude shapes how residents and visitors navigate and experience the terrain.
