Melimoyu, Stratovolcano in Aysén Region, Chile
Cerro Melimoyu is a stratovolcano in the Aysen Region with two nested calderas of different sizes at its summit. The crater landscape features varied geological formations and views across the surrounding area.
The volcano was first documented in writing by pilot Jose de Moraleda y Montero in 1752. Later expeditions, including those led by Captain Robert FitzRoy, expanded understanding of this mountain's location and character.
The name comes from the Mapudungun language, referring to four distinct peaks that resemble natural rock formations at the summit. Local people recognize the volcano by these striking features, which stand out when viewed from the valley.
Access is mainly through Puerto Puyuhuapi, though infrastructure in the surrounding area remains limited. Visitors should prepare for basic facilities and check local conditions before arriving.
The mountain is covered by an ice cap that supports several outlet glaciers feeding down its slopes. This frozen landscape slowly shifts and reshapes the summit's appearance over the years.
