Riñihue Lake is a glacial lake in Los Ríos Region that marks the final point of a chain of seven connected lakes. The water body has two distinct basins separated by a mountainous ridge on its western side.
A major earthquake in the 1960s triggered a massive landslide near Tralcán Mountain. This event prompted significant engineering efforts to prevent flooding of the communities below.
The name comes from Mapuche language and means 'place of cane'. Local communities have long recognized this water body as an important landmark in their territory.
The lake is accessible by road routes that branch from main highways leading south through Los Ríos Region. Lodging and basic services are available in nearby towns around the perimeter.
