University of Art and Social Sciences, Chilean private university
The University of Art and Social Sciences was a private institution in Santiago offering programs in music, dance, cinema, theater, visual arts, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, public administration, and law. Its main building stood in a historic area of the city and also housed master's degrees and doctoral programs focused on Latin American social and cultural topics.
Founded in 1973 during a period when a military government took control of universities, the institution became a space for critical thinking and resistance. After Chile's return to democracy, it expanded with new academic programs and gained full autonomy before closing in 2021.
The institution served as a space where students and faculty engaged in discussions about art, politics, and social issues. Cultural events and debates filled the campus, reflecting a commitment to critical thinking and social awareness.
The main campus was located in historic downtown Santiago near the Unión Latinoamericana metro station on Libertad Street. The institution offered in-person, hybrid, and distance learning formats to accommodate different student needs.
The main building was a former foundry, giving the institution a distinctive character and symbolizing the conversion of industrial space into an educational and cultural hub. This unusual architectural history made it a memorable location for students and visitors.
