San Román Province, Peruvian administrative province in Puno Department, Peru
San Román is a province in the Puno region located in the southern Peruvian Andes at an elevation of about 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). It comprises several districts with Juliaca as its main city, positioned along a mountainous corridor that connects major routes between different departments.
The province was established as an administrative unit to organize the region's growing population, with Juliaca developing as a central hub. Over time, it evolved into a key trading center that brought people and goods through the high plateaus and valleys of southern Peru.
The province takes its name from the San Román church located at the edge of Juliaca, a landmark that shaped the city's identity. Daily life reflects a multilingual reality where Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara coexist, with indigenous customs deeply woven into local traditions and practices.
Bring warm clothing since the high altitude keeps temperatures cool, with freezing conditions possible at night. Road conditions are generally passable, though seeking local advice or updated information helps choose the best route depending on the season.
Juliaca, the capital, was historically a key trading post for wool and alpaca products and maintains this role today. The city also serves as a hub for travelers moving between Lake Titicaca and other Andean destinations.
