Cathedral of Juli, Baroque church building in Juli, Puno, Peru
The Cathedral of Juli is a Baroque church with a three-section stone facade and Renaissance tower in the main square. The structure features a dome and pinnacles that stand out above the surrounding buildings.
Construction finished in 1751 under Peruvian architect Simon de Asto, following building patterns of that era. A fire in 1930 caused significant damage that prompted extensive restoration work completed by 1964.
The interior holds artworks from Cusco and Italy alongside sacred images that draw worshippers throughout the year. These pieces reflect how local devotion and artistic traditions from distant places have merged over time.
The building remains open to visitors while functioning as an active place of worship and community activities. When visiting, be mindful of religious services and enter with appropriate respect for its sacred purpose.
A fire in 1930 destroyed many carved figures and led to temporary closure before reopening in 1964. This dramatic story of loss and recovery remains less known to most visitors, though it shaped the building's survival.
