Ticlio, Mountain pass and railway station in Chicla District, Peru
Ticlio is a mountain pass in the Andes at approximately 4,800 meters elevation, where a historic railway station and the Central Highway of Peru both cross through the landscape. The infrastructure here links rail and road transport at one of the country's highest transportation junctions.
The railway station was built in the late 1800s as part of the major rail line crossing the Andes to serve this high mountain pass. The project opened access to mountain regions that were previously difficult to reach.
The name derives from the local mountain formation and serves as a landmark for those crossing the high peaks of the Andes. Locals and travelers use it as an important reference point when moving through this rugged terrain.
Visitors should prepare for the thin air at this elevation and move slowly to acclimate to the conditions. Water and layered clothing are important since weather here changes rapidly and nights become very cold.
Multiple railway tunnels were built within a short stretch to overcome the extreme elevation changes, showing the enormous engineering feat of the project. These tunnels made it possible to cross the pass by rail where otherwise it would have been impossible.
