Tarma Province, Administrative province in Junín Region, Peru
Tarma Province is an administrative province in the Junín Region of central Peru. The area spans about 2,750 square kilometers with elevations reaching up to 3,050 meters and includes nine distinct districts.
The province was an Intendancy under Spanish rule from 1784 and was reorganized into a Department in 1821. This restructuring marked an important moment in Peru's administrative development following independence.
The province is known for its strong connection to farming and the cultivation of flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables that shape daily life across its nine districts. This tradition runs deep in the identity of local communities and determines how people here live and work.
The province is connected by a network of roads that link the capital region to higher forest areas and facilitate trade and transportation between different ecological zones. Visitors should note that the elevation and terrain create varying conditions across the different districts.
Local residents received a silver shield from José de San Martín in recognition of their significant support during Peru's independence struggle. This memorial stands as a testament to the critical role these communities played in that historic fight.
