Latacunga is a provincial capital in Cotopaxi Province, north-central Ecuador, sitting at 2,760 meters (9,055 feet) between the Alaquez and Cutuchi rivers. The surrounding Andean peaks shape the cityscape with their volcanic terrain visible from most parts of town.
Antonio de Clavijo founded the town in 1557 as a colonial settlement in the region. Between 1698 and 1798, four earthquakes destroyed the buildings completely, leading to multiple reconstruction phases.
