The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena stands in central Quito with thick stone walls and traditional colonial architecture dating from 1592.
Maria de Siliceo established this Dominican monastery on March 14, 1593, during the Alcabalas Revolution, under the protection of Our Lady of Peace.
The monastery museum displays more than 100 pieces of Quito Baroque art across four exhibition rooms, representing religious artistic expressions.
The religious community generates income through the sale of traditional medicines prepared according to ancient recipes and homemade pastries.
In 1975, the remains of President Gabriel Garcia Moreno were discovered within the monastery walls, identified by a tombstone bearing his initials.
