Central University of Ecuador, Public university in Quito, Ecuador
The Central University of Ecuador sits along Avenue America and spreads across several buildings containing lecture halls, research laboratories and administrative offices. The institution organizes its faculties into medical sciences, engineering programs, social sciences and humanities, with each department occupying dedicated spaces on the grounds.
The founding dates back to 1620 when King Philip IV of Spain authorized the creation of a Catholic teaching institution in what was then a colonial city. After Ecuador gained independence, the institution was reorganized as a republican university in 1826 and began training physicians and lawyers.
The institution adopted its current name in 1836 when the country became independent and chose to name it after the nation itself. Visitor groups can now enter the main building and see the assembly hall where academic ceremonies take place.
The entrances are located on Avenue America, and visitors should bring identification as most buildings require authorization to enter. The campus can be explored on foot, with main buildings situated on relatively flat terrain.
The university operates its own publishing program that releases scientific publications in open format and makes research findings freely available. This press is among the few academic institutions in South America that independently produce books and journals.
