Dique Pichanas, Water reservoir in northwestern Córdoba, Argentina
Dique Pichanas is a water reservoir in northwestern Córdoba province, Argentina, held back by two independent concrete buttress walls. The dam sits near the town of Espinillo and supplies the surrounding region with water for both farming and drinking.
The dam was completed in 1978 after more than a decade of engineering work aimed at solving water shortages in the region. Its construction changed how water was managed across northwestern Córdoba, giving surrounding communities a more reliable supply.
Many families near the reservoir keep bees using the surrounding forests, and their honey is sold at local markets. This tradition connects the small communities of the area to the land in a direct and visible way.
The reservoir can be reached via National Route 38 near Espinillo or via Provincial Route 15 from La Higuera. It is worth checking road conditions before setting off, as some stretches can be difficult after rain.
When the water level drops, the tops of trees that were flooded when the dam was built emerge from the surface in several spots. Walking along the shore, you can see this submerged forest rising through the water in a way that is hard to forget.
