Sitio arqueológico de Hualco, Archaeological site in San Blas de los Sauces Department, Argentina.
Hualco is an archaeological site with stone structures and circular dwellings scattered across the slopes of the Velasco Mountains. The complex spans a broad area containing over 150 residential spaces, open squares, and smaller buildings that reveal the layout of this ancient settlement.
The settlement began around 1000 CE during the Regional Integration Period when local communities built permanent residential structures. The site shows evidence of sustained habitation and later gradual shifts in population movement to other regions.
The site reveals everyday life and spiritual practices of the early inhabitants through stone mortars carved for grain processing and open ceremonial areas. Visitors can observe how these communities organized their spaces for both daily tasks and ritual activities.
The site can be accessed from the nearby town of Schaqui with guided tour options offered by knowledgeable staff. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to walk the sloped terrain to explore the various structures across the site.
Among the ceramic vessels found at the site is a pottery bowl that still contains food remains: a corn stew called mazamorra that represents the last meal cooked there. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into the daily diet and cooking methods of the ancient inhabitants.
