Estádio Beira-Rio, Football stadium in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Estádio Beira-Rio is a football stadium in Praia de Belas along the Guaíba waterfront in Porto Alegre, holding 50,848 spectators. The playing surface measures 105 meters long and 68 meters wide with TifGrand grass, while the modern concrete roof structure covers the entire seating area.
Construction began in the late 1950s on landfill ground but was interrupted by financial difficulties until fan fundraising enabled completion in 1969. Internacional defeated Benfica in front of roughly 100,000 people at the opening, and decades later the venue underwent major renovations for the 2014 World Cup.
Supporters of Sport Club Internacional call this venue their second home and gather around the area on match days for traditional barbecues. The name Beira-Rio means riverside in Portuguese, reflecting the waterfront location where fans often stroll along the promenade hours before kickoff.
The best views of the pitch are from the stands along the longer sides, while the end sections offer a louder atmosphere. On match days it helps to arrive early, as the approach roads along the waterfront become crowded during peak hours.
Engineer José Pinheiro Borda passed away during the construction phase, and the venue is unofficially named in his honor. During the 2014 World Cup, five matches took place here, including a round of sixteen game between France and Nigeria.
