Monumento aos Açorianos, Steel monument in central Porto Alegre, Brazil
The Azorean Monument stands 17 meters (56 feet) tall and spans 24 meters (79 feet) in length, featuring intertwined human figures that form a caravel shape made of steel. The composition captures the movement and unity of those who arrived in the region.
The monument honors the arrival of sixty Azorean couples who settled in Porto Alegre in 1752, when the city was known as Porto dos Casais. This settlement marked the beginning of a distinct community in the region.
The structure displays a winged figure at its front, representing victory and drawing from the mythological character of Icarus. This imagery connects the settlers' journey with classical symbols of hope and human aspiration.
The monument sits in Praca dos Acorianos near the Stone Bridge and the State Administrative Center, making it easily accessible in the downtown area. Extensive restoration work completed in 2019 left the structure in excellent condition for viewing.
The Brazilian Bar Association participates in an adoption program dedicated to maintaining the monument. This private commitment has ensured its continuous care and preservation since 2019.
