Cine Theatro Capitólio, Historical movie theater in Centro Histórico, Porto Alegre, Brazil

Cinemateca Capitólio is a theater building in downtown Porto Alegre, located at the intersection of Demétrio Ribeiro Street and Borges de Medeiros Avenue, with ornate relief decorations across its exterior. Inside, it houses a 164-seat cinema, a multimedia projection room, a café, and a documentation center.

The Cine-Theatro Capitólio opened on October 12, 1928, screening the film Casanova. It was designed by engineer Domingos Rocco in an eclectic style with Azorean influences for owner Luis Fallace, on the new corner of Borges de Medeiros Avenue and Demétrio Ribeiro Street. After decades of decline it closed in 1994; the city bought the building in 1995, listed it municipally in 2002 and state-listed it via IPHAE in December 2006. It reopened on March 27, 2015 as the Cinemateca Capitólio.

The building's name comes from its 1928 role as a cinema-theatre, and its first owner was the tailor Luis Fallace. In its early decades it hosted ballets, beauty contests, magic shows and matinees alongside films, and held exclusive contracts with United Artists and RKO Pictures, later with Vera Cruz, Warner Bros. and Columbia. Since reopening in 2015 it has run as a film archive.

The theater is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 AM to 9 PM, and weekends and holidays from 2 PM to 9 PM, with wheelchair access available. The central location at a major intersection makes it easy to find and reach by foot or public transport.

The building houses a documentation center where rare materials about the region's film history can be found and consulted. This archive keeps lesser-known aspects of local cinema alive for researchers and curious visitors.
