Olympic Aquatics Stadium, Swimming center in Barra da Tijuca, Brazil
The Olympic Aquatics Stadium is a swimming center in Barra da Tijuca with multiple pools and an innovative natural ventilation system using approximately 15,000 small holes throughout its structure. The facility seats about 15,000 spectators and uses energy-efficient systems to regulate temperature during competitions.
The facility opened on April 8, 2016, as a primary venue for swimming and water polo competitions during the Rio Olympic Games. After the Games, portions of the structure were dismantled and relocated to training centers throughout the country.
Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão created exterior works for the facility, bringing local artistic expression into its design. These artistic elements shape how visitors experience the building's appearance and connect it to regional creative traditions.
The facility is accessible by car and public transport, with parking available for visitors and good transportation connections to the area. Arriving early on event days helps you navigate the space comfortably and find your way to different sections.
The design's countless small ventilation holes serve dual purposes: they circulate air while creating an interesting play of light on interior surfaces on sunny days. This technical feature became a distinctive architectural element.
