Serra das Araras Ecological Station

Serra das Araras Ecological Station is a protected area in the transitional zone between the Amazon and Pantanal regions, covering more than 28,000 hectares of managed land. The station encompasses mountain ranges and multiple ecosystem types that exist together within a single large conservation area.

This protected area was established in 1982 to preserve natural habitats and support scientific research throughout the region. Its creation represented a significant commitment to protecting biodiversity in this transitional landscape.

This place serves as a working research center where scientists actively study wildlife behavior and ecosystem patterns in the field. Visitors can see the importance of this conservation work through the carefully protected natural environments throughout the site.

Visiting requires advance permission from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, which manages the site. Plan ahead for this authorization process, as visits cannot be arranged on short notice.

This location is home to around 431 bird species, including rare ones like the blue-eyed ground dove. This remarkable diversity of birds makes it an important place for understanding and protecting species found nowhere else.
