Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, Scientific museum in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
The Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo houses nine public galleries filled with mineral specimens, fossils, and preserved wildlife from the region. The collections span geology, paleontology, and zoology to give a complete view of Southern African nature.
The institution started in 1902 within the Bulawayo Public Library and moved to its current standalone building in 1964. The relocation allowed the collections to grow and reach more visitors in dedicated gallery spaces.
The museum serves as a center for natural sciences research through eight departments covering disciplines from arachnology to paleontology.
The museum features a lecture hall seating 120 people and a cafeteria for visitor convenience. The galleries are accessible and laid out for easy walking through the different collections.
The entomology department holds over 5 million insect specimens, one of the largest collections of its kind in the region. This vast collection helps visitors understand the incredible diversity of insects across Southern Africa.
