Kit-Mikayi is a granite formation near Kisumu that rises about 40 meters from the ground. The structure consists of three large granite blocks positioned in a distinctive vertical arrangement that creates its characteristic shape.
The formation received UNESCO recognition in 2019 under the ICH 2003 Convention as intangible heritage requiring protection. This status brought attention to the site's importance and initiated conservation efforts in the region.
The name Kit-Mikayi comes from the Dholuo language and means 'stone of the first wife'. The three rock blocks reflect traditional family structures and remain a symbol of local heritage for the community.
The site lies about 29 kilometers west of Kisumu and is best reached via the Kisumu-Bondo road. Access runs through N'gop-Ngeso primary school, so visitors should approach respectfully and gather local information before visiting.
Members of the Legio Maria religious group regularly come to this location for extended periods of prayer and fasting. This spiritual practice has given the formation special religious significance within the local faith community.
