Panjang Beach

Panjang Beach is a coastal area in Bengkulu stretching along the Indian Ocean with white sand and distinctive pine and casuarina trees lining the shore. The beach features a long stretch of sandy coastline backed by these trees, creating a recognizable landscape along the water's edge.

The beach served as a maritime route during the Dutch colonial period, linking trading ports across western Sumatra. This historical role demonstrates the coast's long importance for regional commerce and sea travel.

Fishing communities here maintain traditional practices using wooden boats and nets, particularly visible during early morning hours when boats set out from shore. This way of life connects the local people directly to the ocean and shapes the rhythm of daily activity along the coast.

The beach is accessible by minibus from central Bengkulu with regular service connections to the area. Visitors should bring water and sun protection, as facilities and shade are limited along much of the shoreline.

Unlike most Indonesian coastal areas where coconut palms dominate, this beach is lined with pine and casuarina trees instead. This unusual tree composition gives the shoreline a different character than typical tropical beaches elsewhere in the country.
