Mount Pangrango, Dormant stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia.
Mount Pangrango is a dormant stratovolcano in West Java that reaches 3,019 meters (9,905 feet) and features dense forest cover with several distinct vegetation zones. The slopes are covered with tropical rainforest that transitions to montane forest and eventually open grassland at higher elevations.
The name comes from ancient Sundanese language and means 'that which huffs and puffs', referring to eruptions in the distant past. The last known period of major activity occurred several centuries ago, and the volcano has since remained dormant.
Local communities in West Java regard Mount Pangrango as a natural landmark where three regencies - Bogor, Cianjur, and Sukabumi - converge at its peak.
Several hiking routes lead to the Mandalawangi summit, with the most accessible trailhead located near the Cibodas Botanical Gardens. The route passes through multiple climate zones and requires good physical condition for the upper sections, as well as warm clothing for the cooler temperatures at higher altitudes.
The mountain serves as the source for four major river systems in Java: the Cisadane, Ciliwung, Citarum, and Cimandiri. These rivers supply water to millions of people across the region and shape agriculture and urban life in much of West Java.
