Iswahyudi Air Force Base, military airbase
Iswahyudi Air Force Base is a military airfield near Madiun in East Java, situated in the Maospati district surrounded by the Lawu and Wilis mountain ranges. The base has two asphalt runways, one exceeding 3,000 meters in length, along with hangars, control towers, maintenance workshops, and facilities to support multiple fighter squadrons.
The base was established in 1939 by the Dutch as Maospati Vliegveld to prepare for potential Japanese attacks during World War II. Following Japanese occupation, Indonesian independence in 1945, and extensive reconstruction, it was renamed Iswahyudi Air Force Base in 1960 to honor a deceased air force officer.
The base is named after Major General Iswahjudi, a fallen Indonesian Air Force officer. For local families and surrounding communities, it is a familiar landmark where relatives work and children grow up hearing the roar of fighter jets as part of everyday life.
The base is located approximately 8 kilometers from Madiun city on flat terrain ideal for aircraft operations. To learn about its operations and history, visitors can visit local museums or speak with personnel who are willing to share insights about the base's role in national air defense.
During Japanese occupation in World War II, the base was used primarily to store aircraft parts rather than for combat operations. This unexpected role reveals how the same facility served different military strategies depending on the controlling force.
