Pura Kehen

Pura Kehen is a Hindu temple in Bangli district built on a hillside with three main sanctuaries connected by levels and pathways. The complex features detailed stone carvings throughout and statues showing scenes from the Ramayana epic, along with multiple ceremonial grounds.

This temple was built in the 13th century as the main religious center of the Bangli Kingdom. Records from earlier centuries show the site had significance long before its major construction.

This temple serves as a gathering place for the community during major Hindu celebrations like Pagerwesi, which occurs twice yearly to honor deities. These ceremonies connect local people to their spiritual traditions and create moments of shared devotion.

The temple sits roughly 2 kilometers north of Bangli town center and is straightforward to reach by local transport. Visitors should dress modestly or arrange a sarong upon arrival, and visiting in the morning hours typically offers the most peaceful experience.

A centuries-old banyan tree stands in the outer sanctuary, its massive root system and sprawling branches creating a green canopy over the grounds. Several walls feature embedded porcelain plates dating to the Dutch colonial era, blending two distinct periods of the site's history.
