Moomba, town in South Australia
Moomba is a small industrial town in northern South Australia built on flat land surrounded by sand dunes. It consists mainly of gas processing facilities, worker accommodations, and a sealed airstrip that serves as the primary connection to the outside world.
The settlement was established in the 1960s following the discovery of underground gas and oil deposits, with the first major gas find at Gidgealpa in 1963 and the first oil discovery at Tirrawarra in 1970. Gas supply to South Australia began in 1969 and later reached Sydney in 1976, making Moomba a vital energy distribution center.
Visitors require special permission to enter as this is a private industrial site with no public facilities or visitor services available. Daily flights connect the location to Adelaide but only for authorized workers and contractors.
The network of long-distance pipelines connecting Moomba to distant cities extends hundreds of kilometers, making it a hidden backbone of Australia's energy infrastructure. A single line stretches more than 800 kilometers directly to Adelaide while others reach to the coast.
