Canning Downs

Canning Downs is a pastoral property featuring a timber homestead, separate kitchen building, and brick stables positioned across open grounds. The complex combines original 1800s structures with later additions designed for horse breeding and veterinary care.

The Leslie brothers established this property in 1840 as one of the first settlements in the Darling Downs region. The homestead expanded over subsequent decades as new structures were added to meet the growing demands of pastoral operations.

The homestead shows how pastoral families lived and organized their days across different spaces for work and home life. The layout reveals the connection between the main house, farm buildings, and the surrounding land that sustained this way of living.

The grounds are walkable and allow visitors to move between the main house, outbuildings, and stable areas at their own pace. Allow time to view both the older structures and the more recent additions built for modern farming operations.

The brick stables showcase some of the earliest uses of corrugated iron roofing in the region, a building technique that changed how farm structures were constructed. This practical innovation spread across other properties and became common in pastoral construction.
