Lahey's Canungra Sawmill Complex

Lahey's Canungra Sawmill Complex, Industrial heritage site in Canungra, Australia.

Description

Lahey's Canungra Sawmill Complex is a former mill site spread across multiple hectares, containing concrete foundations and machinery remnants from timber processing operations. The remains show different areas where cutting, processing, and storage took place during the facility's active years.

History

The site operated from 1884 to 1935 as Queensland's largest softwood processing facility. During these years, the operation became the economic foundation for the region and attracted workers from across the area.

Culture

The Lahey family built worker cottages near the mill, creating a settlement that eventually grew into the town of Canungra. These homes show how mill employees and their families lived close to their workplace.

Practical

The site is located along Finch Road in Canungra and consists mainly of archaeological remains that you can explore on your own. Visiting during daylight hours works best since the remains sit on open ground.

Did you know?

The complex featured a private railway system that ran through dense forest for several kilometers to transport logs from remote areas. This elaborate transport network shows how creative logistics enabled the mill's operations in such a remote location.
