Central Province, Administrative province on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea.
The province sits on the southern coast and spreads across coastal settlements, mountain terrain, and the Sogeri Plateau. The land varies from coastal areas to higher plateaus, creating different environments across the region.
The province received its governing structure in 1976 under a Premier. This system changed in 1995 when a Governor took over the leadership role.
Several local groups live throughout the province and continue their traditional ways of life today. People speak Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu, languages that connect the communities and shape daily life.
Three main roads connect different parts of the province to each other and surrounding areas. You can travel west on the Hiritano Highway, east on the Magi Highway, or north on Sogeri Road.
The provincial administration is based in Konedobu within the capital, but a new administrative center is being planned in Bautama. This move will bring government offices closer to other communities.
