Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail

The trail extends for 175 miles along the coastline of Hawaii Island, connecting multiple segments through varied natural landscapes and traditional paths.

Established in 2000, this trail system incorporates ancient Hawaiian pathways that served as essential transportation routes for coastal communities since prehistoric times.

The trail network passes through over 200 ahupuaʻa, traditional Hawaiian land divisions that showcase the sophisticated environmental management systems of ancient inhabitants.

Access points are available at multiple locations along the route, with the superintendent's office located at 73-4786 Kanalani Street in Kailua-Kona.

The northern section begins at Upolu Point near Moʻokini Heiau and continues south through four national parks before ending at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
