Kauhakō Crater

Kauhakō Crater is a volcanic crater on Kalaupapa Peninsula on the island of Molokai, surrounded by steep walls that drop down to its floor. A deep lake fills the crater basin, creating an enclosed body of water that sits at the lowest point of the geological formation.

The crater formed hundreds of thousands of years ago through volcanic activity that shaped the Kalaupapa Peninsula. This geological structure is a remnant of the early volcanic phase that built the island of Molokai.

The National Park Service maintains this geological formation within Kalaupapa National Historical Park, preserving both natural and historical elements.

The site is difficult to reach and requires special conditions or permissions for access. Visitors should check ahead about accessibility and any restrictions that apply.

The lake within the crater has an extraordinary ratio between depth and surface area, making it a geologically remarkable body of water. This extreme depth relative to its small water surface is a direct result of the crater's bowl shape.
