The funnel-shaped Kauhakō Crater stretches 500 meters by 650 meters across the center of Kalaupapa Peninsula on Molokai island.
The crater emerged between 230,000 and 300,000 years ago through volcanic eruptions that formed the current geological structure of Kalaupapa Peninsula.
The National Park Service maintains this geological formation within Kalaupapa National Historical Park, preserving both natural and historical elements.
Regular monitoring of water quality occurs quarterly at Lake Kauhakō, which contains a deep lake measuring 248 meters in depth.
Lake Kauhakō holds the record for the highest depth-to-surface area ratio among all lakes worldwide, with a surface width of only 50 meters.
