Umauma Falls, Triple waterfall in Hamakua Coast, Hawaii.

Umauma Falls is a triple waterfall on the Hamakua Coast where water drops over dark volcanic rock in a series of cascades. The falls flow through a lush canyon surrounded by dense green vegetation and create a dramatic descent across the landscape.

The waterfall system developed millions of years ago when the Mauna Kea volcano emerged from the ocean and created layers of volcanic rock. These ancient volcanic processes shaped the geology that channels water into cascades today.

The Umauma River has shaped how people experience this stretch of the Hamakua Coast, marking a natural transition in the landscape. Visitors walking through the area can sense how water and vegetation work together to define the character of this place.

A paved path leads to the falls, and it is best to start your visit at the visitor center to get oriented before heading to the waterfall. Wear proper footwear since the paths can become wet and slippery, especially after rainfall.

Deep plunge pools form at the base of each waterfall, sometimes becoming natural swimming areas depending on water flow. These clear pools offer an unexpected place to swim when conditions allow.
