Togiak Wilderness

Togiak Wilderness is a protected area in southwestern Alaska covering 2.2 million acres. It contains mountain ranges, three major river systems, and numerous large lakes spread across its expanse.

Alaska Native peoples have lived in this region for more than 4,000 years, as shown by archaeological finds. The area has long been valued for its abundant fish and wildlife resources.

The area remains important to local communities for hunting and fishing practices that have been passed down through generations. These activities continue to shape how people live and connect with the landscape today.

Visitors can only reach this wilderness by chartered plane or boat from Dillingham. Planning ahead and booking early is essential since transportation options are limited.

The coastal areas host around one million seabirds like murres and puffins in large nesting colonies. This bird concentration forms one of the largest breeding grounds along the Alaska coast.
