Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge encompasses 19.2 million acres of wetlands and tundra between the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers, extending to the Bering Sea coast.

President Theodore Roosevelt designated the first protection of these lands in 1909, with the current refuge established by President Jimmy Carter in 1980.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta supports 25,000 Yup'ik residents across 35 villages who maintain traditional subsistence practices through hunting and fishing.

Access to the refuge requires transportation by small aircraft or boat from Bethel, which serves as the main gateway with connections to Anchorage.

The coastal region hosts one of the largest concentrations of waterfowl globally, with over one million ducks and half a million geese breeding annually.
