Ixtlán del Rio

Los Toriles is an archaeological site with stone structures, underground burial chambers, residential areas, and a circular temple distributed across multiple excavated sectors. The location spans different zones where visitors can explore various aspects of the ancient settlement.

The site encompasses three distinct cultural periods from 300 BCE to 1521 CE, including Los Concheros, the Shaft Tomb Tradition, and the Aztatlán Tradition. These phases record continuous occupation and development of the region over more than one thousand years.

The regional museum displays pottery and figurines recovered from underground burial chambers, offering insight into daily life and religious practices of ancient inhabitants.

The site is walkable with marked paths connecting different areas. Visitors should expect uneven surfaces and partially shaded trails, so sturdy shoes and sun protection are recommended.

The circular temple is among the few round ceremonial structures found at archaeological sites in the region. This unusual design sets it apart from the typical rectangular buildings common to the area.
