Bay Islands Department, Administrative department in Caribbean Sea, Honduras.
The Bay Islands Department encompasses three main islands - Roatan, Guanaja, and Utila - along with 60 smaller cays spread across the Caribbean waters.
The department gained its official status in 1872 after being transferred from British control to Honduras through the Wide-Cruz treaty signed in 1859.
The islands population reflects diverse origins, with residents speaking Spanish, English, and Garifuna languages, maintaining traditions from European and Caribbean heritage.
Visitors reach the islands through Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport in Roatan or regular ferry services connecting to mainland Honduras.
The department contains the second largest coral reef system in the world, supporting over 500 fish species and numerous marine organisms.
