Circasia, Mountain municipality in Quindío Department, Colombia
Circasia is a mountain municipality in Quindío Department at an elevation of about 1,772 meters (5,814 feet). The terrain spans approximately 91 square kilometers (35 square miles) with coffee plantations and vegetation covering rolling hills.
The settlement was founded in 1884 by Javier Arias and became administratively independent from Filandia in 1906. This separation allowed it to develop as its own municipality in the coffee region.
The municipality is part of Colombia's Coffee Cultural Landscape, recognized by UNESCO, and local farmers maintain traditional growing methods on their land. Visitors can observe how these agricultural practices shape the surrounding hills and valleys.
The town center connects to Montenegro by a paved road and to Filandia by a rural route that crosses the Roble River at Aguadeños Pass. Visitors should be prepared for mountainous terrain and variable weather conditions.
The cemetery here is Colombia's first secular burial ground, established in 1933 and open to people regardless of faith or background. This facility was ahead of its time and continues to serve as a place of burial for all.
