Tortuguero Conservation Area, Conservation area in Jiménez, Costa Rica.
Tortuguero Conservation Area is a protected territory in Costa Rica covering approximately 77,000 hectares of land and marine ecosystems combined. The space is formed by a network of rivers, wetlands, and forests that create distinct habitats for wildlife.
The protected area was established in 1970 as part of Costa Rica's national conservation system. Its boundaries were expanded three times over the following decades to include additional land and marine zones.
The communities surrounding this territory, such as Barra del Tortuguero and San Francisco, maintain a Caribbean way of life where bicycles and boats are the main ways to move around. This water-dependent culture shapes how people interact with the landscape daily.
Visitors reach the area by taking buses from Cariari to La Pavona, then switching to boat taxis that serve different sections. Since boats run on set schedules, it helps to check timing ahead of your visit.
This conservation area hosts the largest nesting ground for green sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere. These turtles return to the same beaches over many years, making it one of the world's most significant breeding ecosystems.
