Yuhualixqui

Yuhualixqui is a volcanic formation in Iztapalapa, located in the eastern part of Mexico City. It rises to about 2,420 meters elevation as part of the Santa Catarina mountain range.

This volcano experienced intensive mining activities over several decades that significantly changed its original structure. The extraction of resources left visible marks on the geological formation.

The name comes from Nahuatl words linked to night and darkness, showing how indigenous peoples connected their language to the natural landscape. This naming reflects how communities understood and related to the geological features around them.

The site is located within a populated neighborhood and is regularly monitored by local residents and environmental groups. Visitors should be aware that the formation has been affected by past mining and geological activity.

The structure sustained considerable damage during an earthquake, after which geological monitoring increased significantly. This highlighted the importance of the site for understanding seismic activity in the region.
