Iztaccíhuatl–Popocatépetl National Park

The national park spans 39,819 hectares and contains Mexico's second and third highest peaks, Popocatépetl at 5,426 meters and Iztaccíhuatl at 5,230 meters.

President Lázaro Cárdenas established this national park on November 8, 1935, marking the beginning of Mexico's extensive conservation efforts through national parks.

The volcanoes' names come from Nahuatl, with Iztaccíhuatl meaning sleeping woman and Popocatépetl meaning smoking warrior, reflecting indigenous mythology.

Mountain streams within the park supply water to major metropolitan areas including Mexico City, Puebla, and Tlaxcala through natural filtration systems.

The park houses 48 mammal species and 161 bird species, including the endangered volcano rabbit, which exists only in Mexican volcanic regions.
