Glaciar Norte, Ice mass on Popocatépetl volcano, Mexico.
Glaciar Norte is an ice mass on the northern face of Popocatépetl volcano in central Mexico. The formation occupies several hundred meters of the upper slopes where snow and ice have accumulated over time.
This ice mass began to shrink noticeably in the second half of the 20th century. Its retreat accelerated due to rising temperatures and increased volcanic activity over the following decades.
Mexican scientists regularly monitored this glacier to understand climate patterns and geological changes in the central Mexican volcanic belt.
The location sits at high elevation and requires good preparation and physical fitness for access. Visitors should be aware of volcanic conditions and changeable weather when planning a trip.
In the final years of the ice mass, black volcanic deposits from fumaroles accumulated on remaining snow patches. These dark mineral deposits significantly altered the appearance of the icy surface.
