Puebla sinkhole

Puebla sinkhole, Natural sinkhole in Zacatepec, Mexico

The Puebla sinkhole is a water-filled cavity in Zacatepec that formed through natural geological processes, marked by its circular shape and significant depth. It is characterized by strong underground water currents that continuously shape the formation.

The sinkhole appeared suddenly in May 2021 on farmland, capturing the attention of the local community. Scientists investigated the site and confirmed that natural limestone erosion beneath the surface was the cause of the formation.

Local residents have set up small food stands and viewing areas near the sinkhole, turning it into a weekend gathering place for visitors. The site has become a focal point where people come together to observe this natural phenomenon and learn about it.

The Mexican government has installed protective barriers around the site to keep visitors at a safe distance from the edge. It is best to respect the safety markings and view the sinkhole from the designated observation areas.

Two dogs fell into the opening and survived for four days on a ledge below the surface. Their rescue required a complex operation with ropes and pulleys that became a local event.
