Laguna de Términos, Protected coastal lagoon in Carmen, Mexico
Laguna de Términos is an extensive coastal lagoon near Carmen in Campeche where multiple rivers connect through channels and tidal estuaries. The water constantly shifts with tides and currents, creating a dynamic landscape of mangrove forests, waterways, and open water.
The lagoon was first documented in 1518 by Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva, who found Maya settlements along its shoreline. Since then, fishing has remained the foundation of life and work in this region.
Fishing families have built their way of life around this lagoon for centuries, and you can still see them working the water daily. The pace of life here follows the tides and seasonal patterns that shape the community.
You can best reach the lagoon from Ciudad del Carmen, where local boat tours depart to explore the mangrove areas. Bring sun protection and be aware of tides, as they affect water levels and access to certain areas.
The water in the lagoon renews roughly every nine days as ocean waves exchange about half its volume through two permanent channels. This constant renewal makes it one of the most dynamic ecosystems in the region.
