Sian Ka'an spans 1.3 million acres of coastal wetlands, mangroves, savannahs, lagoons, coral reefs, and tropical forests along the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The reserve contains distinctive PETENES formations where mangrove trees grow on scattered islets, reaching heights of 30 meters and supporting extensive biodiversity.
