Sistema Ox Bel Ha

Sistema Ox Bel Ha is an underground cave system in Quintana Roo with interconnected passages flooded by water beneath the surface. The network spans hundreds of kilometers and contains numerous cenotes, natural lakes, and limestone formations throughout its chambers.

The cave system was discovered in 1996 and contains prehistoric human remains within its passages. These findings provide evidence of early human settlement and use of the caves in the distant past.

The ancient Maya used these caves for ceremonies and burials, as shown by archaeological discoveries in the passages. The spiritual role these spaces played remains visible in how the site is treated today.

Access to this system is only possible for experienced divers with specialized training, as the underwater passages are demanding and hazardous. Visitors should know that only authorized professionals offer guided diving expeditions.

The network contains over 160 cenotes, natural sinkholes that provide access to underground water reserves. These numerous openings make the system geographically complex and particularly valuable for research.
