Akumal, Beachfront locality in Riviera Maya, Mexico
Akumal is a beachside locality on the Riviera Maya that spreads across several bays with white sand and coral reefs below the surface. The water stays clear enough to see underwater life from above, and the place sits between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
A coconut plantation site was transformed in 1958 to create a destination for divers. These beginnings as a diving hub shaped how the place developed over time as somewhere people came to explore underwater.
The community attracts artists and craftspeople who settle into the relaxed way of life and shape local activities. Residents maintain an open, international spirit and welcome visitors who show interest in the area's natural surroundings and how people live here.
The place works well for visitors who want to swim, snorkel, or explore the marine surroundings. Paths and areas are generally accessible, though comfortable shoes help when walking across sandy and rocky sections.
The Yal-ku Lagoon shows a natural spot where underground fresh water meets ocean water, creating separate layers within the lagoon. This mixing allows different fish species to live side by side in the same body of water.
