Cozumel Island is a Caribbean landmass in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The coastline alternates between rocky sections of white limestone and sheltered coves, while the interior is covered with low jungle and mangroves.
Maya communities settled here from the 3rd century onward and used the site as a trading hub for salt, honey and jade. Spanish navigators landed in the early 1500s and brought diseases that sharply reduced the population.
The name comes from the Maya language and means „island of swallows
Passengers arrive by plane or by ferry from the mainland. Many visitors rent scooters or cars to explore the coastal road that passes through San Miguel town and continues to the southern beaches.
Beneath the surface run more than 200 cave systems that cut through the porous rock and are filled with freshwater in places. Divers explore these underground passages, which sometimes feature small stalactites and hidden chambers.
