Located 16 kilometers from the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel spans 48 kilometers in length and 16 kilometers in width, with limestone terrain and tropical vegetation.
The Maya established settlements on Cozumel by 250 CE, making it a center for commerce and ceremonies until Spanish expeditions arrived in the early 1500s.
The Festival of Santa Cruz and El Cedral Fair brings together residents each April for traditional rodeos, music performances, and local competitions.
Visitors reach the island through the international airport near San Miguel or by regular ferry services departing from Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.
The Palancar and Columbia reef systems surrounding Cozumel contain more than 500 fish species and 26 coral types in waters reaching 30 meters deep.
